Termites or White Ants?

Termites or White Ants?

In Australia, we’ve always been straightforward in naming things. Once upon a time, when we spotted these small creatures living together that looked a lot like ants, we decided to call them “White Ants.” It made sense at the time.

However, the catch is this: Termites, affectionately known as “White Ants” in Australia, are not ants at all. The confusion arises from their striking physical similarities. Both species have six legs, antennas, and live in close-knit colonies. Yet, their differences in body structure and behavior set them apart.

From a scientific standpoint, termites belong to the cockroach family, specifically the sub-order Blattodea, while ants are part of the wasp family, known as the Order Hymenoptera. Termites lack the segmented bodies characteristic of ants.

The Essential Difference In a nutshell: Black ants might invade your kitchen and nibble on the food you’ve left out, but termites, often called “White Ants,” have a more destructive appetite – they’ll feast on your very home!
