Over the holiday break there were quite a number of wet and humid days. I noticed in my bathroom a stream of ants headed into the shower and wondered what was going on?

There are a few reasons that ants are attracted to your bathroom:

  • Accessibility - drains, open windows, small gaps in tiles, allow access for these tiny pests
  • Moisture - essential to keep the ants hydrated so you will often find them in bathrooms, kitchens and laundries
  • Bathroom products such as shampoo, conditioner and soap may smell like food to ants

Here are a few tips for keeping ants under control in/around your home:

  1. Block entry points, seal up gaps in tiles and windows etc

  2. Keep surfaces clean and remove any traces of sweets or proteins that would likely entice them into the area

  3. Empty bins regularly

In picture 2 below you can see the ants after a pest control treatment using Optigard Ant Gel (along with other methods in different areas), all coming in to feed on what they believe is a tasty meal, unfortunately for them this treatment ended up in their demise. The very next morning I found them, unmoving on the other side of the shower.

You can find more tips and information on ants at AEPMAs (Australian Environmental Pest Management Association) website here.

Please note, it is not recommended to use aerosol to kill ants as the chemicals they contain are harmful to breathe in and harmful if your skin comes into contact with the treated surface.

For best results, combine the above tips with a full PEST CONTROL service on an annual basis at least.
