Right now, the cold weather has driven termites into their nests and colonies, where they’ll continue to build and protect their existing homes. Once October comes and the weather warms up, though, you might find yourself faced by a familiar winged insect in or around your home, particularly around the bathroom window.

Unfortunately, there’s every chance that insect is a swarming termite.

When it comes time for termite colonies to expand, they will release tens of thousands of swarming, reproductive kings and queens. This usually occurs during the late spring or summer, during times of high humidity both before and after rain, and any time from early evening right through to midnight. These termites are attracted to light, and can travel several kilometres to land on your roof or porch depending on the direction of the wind when they take off. After landing, they’ll promptly shed their wings and begin searching for a partner to begin a new colony with, and they’ll try to do so in a cool, dark place such as your bathroom.

What do you do if you have found termites or termite wings in your home? The most important thing is not to panic - if you’ve found winged termites or even just shed wings, that means the colony is likely nearby.
