Joel Mitchell is a true asset to the team at Conquer Termites Northside and the pest industry as a whole. Joel has been with Conquer Termites 14+ years and is now one of our senior technicians and key educators. We sat down with Joel recently to learn more about what got him into the industry, his favourite products and much more!

How long have you been in the industry?

I first got my pest control license in April 1998, qualifying for general pest control, later upgrading to a Timber Pest license. So next month it will be 25yrs as a “pestie”.

Why did you decide to go into the industry?

I was offered a position by a friend in pest control. I had just received a redundancy and was looking for work. Having never (and not since either) been let go from a position, I was unsure what to do. I soon found out though and never looked back!

Favourite Pest and why?

It must be a termite of course, but which one? There are several contenders, but I’ll choose Nasutitermes Walkeri. This species of termite is rarely found in houses, and when it is usually not causing much damage. They prefer hardwood timbers, and normally found high in houses – roof voids. What makes them fascinating is their ability to defend themselves without large mandibles. They have large numbers of soldiers, and their defence against ants is quite effective.

Favourite product and why?

Trelona by BASF. Very low toxicity Termite management system, that is relatively quick (for baiting) and robust in construction. It will also only treat termites which will be a pest to your home.

Who do you look up to in the industry?

Dr Don Ewart.  I have been visiting his termite pages for over 20 years! And we have had plenty of chats about unusual termite habits etc.

Favourite type of jobs to be on?

Houses with current termite activity. I enjoy the challenge of managing a termite infestation, and helping the home owner to have peace of mind that their termite issue will be solved.

Best advice to give the home owner?

Implement the advice given in your Termite Inspection report. Rectify those conducive conditions! Fix the leaking tap/Air conditioner condensate drain/shower. Ensure that you have a Termite management system that is current.

Best advice to give a new pestie?

Take your time! You cannot learn everything at once. Never stop learning. I am still learning after 25 years😊
