The technical name for these guys is alates, which describes their winged appearance. Like a flying ant, these termites take flight with the purpose of finding an area to create a new colony. They are not the most skilled flyers, but they have a taste for moisture. This means the end of our storm season is the best time for flying termites to invade your property.

The initial invasion of flying termites is not where the real danger lays. The danger comes from their ability to nest. If they get the chance, they will cultivate a nest that can lead to a colony who damage your house slowly over the coming years.

For that reason, it is important you notice the differences between flying termites and ants. That way, you can identify them and get them exterminated correctly. The easiest way to differentiate between the two is that the flying termites have longer wings. They also have a thicker body to that of an ant.
