The warning sign that most people associate with a termite infestation is sound. Sound can be used to diagnose the issue in two ways. The first is the sound that comes from tapping on a wooden area. If it produces a hollow sound, that is a key warning sign. In a termite infestation, they will eat the wood from the inside out, which is how this hollow sound comes to be.

The second warning sign associated with noise is from the termites themselves. They're noisy eaters. This means, if you're suffering from a termite infestation, you might be able to hear them. It will sound like a low clicking noise. Aside from eating, they also use sound and vibration to warn their colony if they sense danger.  

It is also common for people to confuse termites with white ants. This is due to them being a similar size and build. Termites themselves are also light in colour, which can add to the confusion. If you've noticed white ants in your home, that could be a warning sign. Its worth getting them checked by a professional, to rule out termite infestation.

The appearance of flying termites themselves is also a good warning sign. These termites are the ones who set out to seek mates, so that they can establish a new colony. They lose their wings after this, which is another warning sign to watch out for.
