This photo is from a job in Albany Creek where we found damage in a roof void, and damage in a window frame on the ground floor as well.

It’s not uncommon for us to come across a scene like the one in this photo. Significant damage to the roofing timbers can be seen here. While your first thought may be termites, in truth, the damage has been done by a leak in the roof, causing fungal decay.

That’s not to say that you don’t need to worry about termites here. In fact, this is exactly the kind of environment that termites are attracted to. They are drawn to moisture, and in this case there is large amounts of it. This is a prime area for termites, and they will be only too ready to continue the damage, here and through the rest of the home, once they’ve gained entry.

And remember, once they find a way into your house, they can set up their bivouacs and nests anywhere. So finding termite damage yourself doesn’t mean that you’ve found where they have come in. So it’s important to arrange for a licensed pest control technician to come and give your home a thorough termite inspection. They can treat the area the termites are in, and they can then advise you on the best way to prevent further infestations.

If there is water damage somewhere in the timber structure of your home, it’s important to take steps to fix it. Follow it up with a termite inspection, and you’re on your way to protecting one of your most valuable investments.
